Loosen Your Grip

I start every day with God, reading daily devotions from Our Daily Bread. Today’s devotion is titled “An Open, Generous Heart.” Winn Collier wrote this devotion. The scripture reading is from 1 Timothy 6:17–19 (NIV)with the key verse, “Be generous and willing to share.” 1 Timothy 6:18. My beloved children, grandchildren, cousins, nephews, brothers, and sisters in Christ; for all I write, I first pray to God to guide my words to serve as spiritual food and guidance. I desire God to be my sole source of writing. All the credit goes to God, not me. I am his humble servant. I thank God that He led me to use Our Daily Bread Ministries as my inspiration for comments and witness.

God calls us to live with open hands, giving without hesitation as we can, providing what’s truly best for those in need. I want to say that we are generous up to a certain point. I have a guilty conscience about tithing. For most of our lives, we live paycheck to paycheck. The thought of giving 10% of our earnings to the church is frightening. We have also heard different opinions on tithing. We are generous, and we are not hoarders.

We do not inspire to be rich or worship money or wealth. We do rely on God and thank him for what we do have and when we can give. God calls us to live with open hands, giving freely as we can, providing what’s truly best for those in need. As we live with an open, generous heart, we know that we don’t need to fear running out of what we need. The Bible tells us that in our compassionate generosity, we’re taking “hold of [true] life” (v. 19).
